Tenerife: The Canary Islands

The largest of the seven Canary Islands off the coast of Africa, Tenerife is a great year-around tourist destination. The weather has been described as an eternal spring, indicating a wealth of mild temperatures and sunshine. The mild weather brings many to take holidays to Tenerife in the winter months, making December to February the high tourist season there.

During this high tourist season, the most popular destinations are those that are celebrating various carnivals. The carnival celebrations on this island have been said to rival those of New Orleans and Rio de Janeiro. These carnivals are the most important celebrations everywhere in Tenerife—every town has their own fiestas in grand style, perpetuating the local saying that there is a party every day somewhere in Tenerife. There are twenty seven days of carnivals during this celebratory time with vibrant costumes, dancing and great music being trademarks of these celebrations.

Puerto de la Cruz is the major tourist draw of Tenerife. Like the aforementioned city of Santa Cruz, Puerto de La Cruz also has extensive exotic gardens to stroll in and enjoy.

The Jardin beach is also a great vacation destination, having been recently regenerated. Because of the mild temperatures year around, Tenerife has imported endless species of vegetation for locals and travelers alike to frolic about in

Another renowned destination in Puerto de la Cruz, is the Lago Martianez. A man-made lake divided into a series of pools, this work of art was created by the Canary artist Cesar Manrique, this is a beautiful project allowing for great appreciation of the water amid exotic vegetation.

All the major cities of Tenerife boast a great night life with many restaurants, from the casual all the way to the jacket required types of places. There are even some bona fide English pubs, if that is up your alley. Great food and a party-like atmosphere make the nightlife shine.
